For conservative businessman and Secretary of State Brian Kemp, being pro-life extends beyond protecting an embryo, fetus, or baby in the womb. Kemp supports adoption reform and efforts to streamline the adoption process in Georgia. As governor, Brian Kemp will work tirelessly to ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive.
Adoption Tax Credit
The cost of adopting domestically, or much less internationally, is prohibitively expensive for many hardworking Georgians.
As governor, Kemp will raise the current adoption tax credit from $2,000 to $6,000. The tax credit is available for five years with no income cap, and can be used for ALL adoptions – not just the adoption of a qualified foster child. Georgia taxpayers can amend their previous returns to help cover adoption expenses and contributions made by an employer will not be taxed.
Partner with Adoption Organizations to Pre-Approve Families, Place Abandoned Babies
Every year, hundreds of babies are abandoned by birth mothers in Georgia hospitals. After endless piles of paperwork and red tape, these innocent children are transferred to DFACS and placed in foster care. This process is long, complicated, and not in the best interest of the state or the child.
As governor, Brian Kemp will repeal the red tape that prevents abandoned children from finding an immediate home. Through a partnership with nonprofits and adoption attorneys, Georgia families who want to adopt will have the opportunity to be pre-approved for the adoption of abandoned babies. This will ensure that these children receive a home in days instead of months or years.
Establish Trust Account for Adoption Fees
To protect hardworking Georgians who are trying to expand their families through adoption, Brian Kemp will introduce legislation that requires private adoption agencies to cap fees and establish trust accounts – similar to what is used in the legal community – to house adoption fees until a child is finally placed with their new parents. This prevents questionable practices and ensures transparency and accountability throughout the entire system.
Support Rep. Bert Reeves Adoption Reform Bill
Efforts are underway in the State House to update antiquated language and laws that impact the adoption process in Georgia.
As governor, Brian Kemp will publicly support Rep. Reeves’ bill and sign it within the first 100 days of his term.
